I enjoy making a contemporary approach to traditional figurative painting, taking inspiration from and adapting the aesthetics of symbolist and Northern European art. Through this conversation I explore sensuality, materiality and surface in my work. I am interested in the internal tension within a painting; the lush meat of colourful oils against graphic shapes and drawings; the beauty against the grotesque. Within the work evolves a sense of the transubstantiated body: graphic becomes flesh, becomes ornament, becomes key conceptual element. The intimacy of the subject revolves around contemporary modernist thought and design.

A contemporary reading of gender, sexual identity and body politics informs my practice. Within a post-feminist theoretical framework, personal ideological opinions on the body transcend the image of the body within my work. As these self-conscious figurative elements in the work are either actively or passively engaging in critical political thought, I also explore slow subtleties in the informed aesthetics.

Experimenting with form and technique drives my practice forward as I constantly seek to address and develop new things in each painting. While my interest in figuration is a key concept in my work, the revealed layers of process create a momentum of potential energy as I address the method of making and the painting as object.
